Het Schip (“The Ship”) is an expressionist social housing complex in Amsterdam West, designed by architect Michel de Klerk and built in 1919 for the housing association Eigen Haard. Its shape gave the building its nickname. The museum occupies the former school within the complex.
The permanent exhibition covers the rise of housing associations and the Amsterdam School in architecture and decorative arts, alongside temporary exhibitions. On a guided tour you see the building, a reconstructed slum dwelling, the former post office and the museum apartment.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00–17:00. Guided tours run hourly from 12:00 to 16:00; the 15:00 tour is in English (small surcharge).
