The Majoor Bosshardthuis is in one of the oldest stone houses in Amsterdam, on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, dating from 1605. For many years it was the home and workplace of Major Alida Bosshardt, a leading figure in the Salvation Army, who took in people working in prostitution and people without a home.
On a free guided tour of about an hour you go through the house from top to bottom. The floors are furnished as in the major’s time, and exhibitions cover the work of the Salvation Army. Queen Máxima opened the museum in June 2022.
Visits are by appointment or guided tour only, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 10:00 and 15:30. The entrance is at Oudezijds Armsteeg 19. The old building is not suitable for wheelchair users.
