The Fo Guang Shan He Hua Temple on the Zeedijk, in Amsterdam’s small Chinatown near the Nieuwmarkt, is the largest Buddhist temple in the city built in traditional Chinese style. The city granted permission in 1994, and the temple was opened by Queen Beatrix on 15 September 2000. It was designed by Dutch architect Fred Greven.
Visitors enter through the Guan Yin shrine; the complex also includes a Jade Buddha shrine, a meditation hall, classrooms and a library. The name means giving hope and being a blossoming lotus for Buddhism in the Netherlands.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 13:00–15:30 (Sundays for members only). Closed on 24 and 25 December. Please dress and behave respectfully.
