The Montelbaanstoren was built in 1516 as part of Amsterdam’s defences, on what is now the Oudeschans canal. In 1606 the architect Hendrick de Keyser added the elegant open spire that makes it one of the city’s most photographed towers.
The tower is not open to visitors, but the view from the bridges and quays along the Oudeschans is beautiful, especially in the evening. Canal cruises often pass it on their route.
