Car rental in Amsterdam: when it makes sense and how to park

In Amsterdam itself a car is more hassle than help: streets are narrow, parking is scarce and among the most expensive in Europe. But a rental car is great for day trips. Here is how to do it smartly.

When to rent

Do you need a car in Amsterdam?

Skip the car for the city itself: trams, bikes and walking are faster.

Rent a car for trips further afield: the tulip fields and Keukenhof in spring, the coast, or villages that are hard to reach by public transport.

Pick-up tip: collect the car on the day you leave the city, for example at Schiphol, instead of paying for parking while you sightsee.

Where to park in Amsterdam

  • Street parking in the centre is very expensive and limited.
  • Park + Ride (P+R): park at one of the P+R locations around the A10 ring road at a discounted rate and continue by public transport. You must travel on to the centre by public transport to get the discount, and the maximum stay is limited.
  • Hotel parking is rare in the centre; ask before you book.
