The Hortus Botanicus on the Plantage Middenlaan is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, founded in 1638. You will find plants from around the world in the garden and in several glasshouses, including the giant Victoria water lily, whose flowers open white and turn pink with a sweet, pineapple-like scent, and the king protea from South Africa.
There is a year-round programme of activities, a shop (open without a ticket) and the Hortus café for garden visitors.
Opening hours: daily, 10:00–17:00, except 25 December and 1 January. Card payment only.
Most of the garden is wheelchair accessible; paths are gravel, and some glasshouses have thresholds and manual doors. Assistance dogs are welcome on a lead.
