Het Grachtenhuis tells the story of Amsterdam’s canal ring and of the canal house it occupies. The permanent exhibition is a multimedia presentation: with an audio guide (included, nine languages) you walk through five rooms and watch the city take shape around you. The tour takes about 40 minutes and starts every ten minutes for up to twelve people; the last tour begins at 16:30.
Afterwards you can visit temporary exhibitions in the period rooms, including the Andriessen room with 18th-century wall paintings by Jurriaan Andriessen. Children aged 6–14 get free colouring sheets and trails. The museum is wheelchair accessible, with a lift and adapted toilet.
