De Kompaszaal occupies the former passenger terminal of the Royal Dutch Steamship Company (KNSM), opened in 1956, on the KNSM island. The maritime interior by ship architect Johan van Tienhoven hosts swing jazz and Lindy Hop classes, dance nights, rock ’n’ roll parties and salsa, often with live music. During events and opening hours the bar and terrace (with views over the IJ) serve coffee, drinks, soup, toasties and snacks.
The 500 m² listed hall can be hired for meetings, parties and weddings. Wheelchair-friendly. Groups of more than eight should call ahead.
