Museum Tot Zover (“So Far”) is dedicated to funeral art, the history of death and modern funeral culture in the Netherlands. Its collection of more than 2,000 objects is arranged around three themes (Farewell rituals, The dead body, and Mourning & remembrance), from mourning boards and death masks to hair jewellery and over 250 scale models of hearses.
It is thoughtful rather than morbid, and invites you to talk about mortality and what matters in life. The museum is in the former director’s house of De Nieuwe Ooster, one of the Netherlands’ largest cemeteries, just past the monumental main gate, and has a café. Accessibility is limited: part of the museum is reached via six steps or a lift.
