The Royal Palace Amsterdam stands on Dam Square in the heart of the city. Built as the city hall in the 17th century and designed by Jacob van Campen, it is now the official reception palace of King Willem-Alexander, used for state visits and other royal receptions.
When the palace is open, you can walk through the historic halls where royal guests are received and admire the architecture, royal interiors and paintings by Dutch masters such as Govert Flinck and Ferdinand Bol. Explore with a free audio tour or join a guided tour; there are family audio tours and a free trail for children.
Getting there: tram to Dam, or metro 52 to Rokin; about ten minutes’ walk from Centraal Station.
