The Schreierstoren is one of the few remaining towers of Amsterdam’s medieval city wall, built in the late 15th century on the waterfront near Centraal Station. Its name is often linked to “weeping” wives saying goodbye to sailors, although it more likely refers to the tower’s sharp corner.
A plaque recalls that Henry Hudson set sail from here in 1609 on the voyage that took him to the river later named after him in New York. Today the tower houses a café, and it is an easy stop on a walk from Centraal Station to the Nieuwmarkt.
